Let The Women Step In…

by TaxMama on January 13, 2009

When women were tired of the effects of polio, they started going door to door to collect dimes for research. This is how the March of Dimes started. When a vaccine was developed, the question became “How do we treat the entire United States?” This happened when I was in third grade in 1963, I think! It was decided that the PTA’s ( Parent Teacher Association) would be the best avenue.  My mother, Beth Porter, was president of the PTA in Shamrock, Texas. ( Shamrock is a little town in the Texas Panhandle. There were 50 in my graduating class of 1972.) This was also the year we integrated the schools. Up until that time, we had the white school, the black school, the white cemetery, the black cemetery, etc. Within 3 days, my mother had met with the white school board, the black school board, the local hospital and doctors. The date was set to provide the entire town of Shamrock the polio ‘sugar cube.’ This was the first interracial activity in Shamrock, Texas. This happened because women knew it was the right thing to do.

The reason I tell you this story is this: when women decide to change the world, they do. It really doesn’t matter how we got in this mess. Let’s let the ol’ boys in Washington determine that. We have more important things to do. We need to help our girlfriends!  Even if we don’t know these other women by name, we share many of the same stories. It’s time that the women stepped up to do the right thing. We need to be the women we want our daughters to be.
