Do Something Nice For Others
I have a friend who is virtually alone suffering from severe cancer. Every morning I try to send her a brief “cheer leading” email, encouraging her to hang in there. Every year I select a “special friend” for an “extended holiday treat.” This “treat” happens to be a six month fun “yard sale” delivered to the home. I am good at finding bargains and matching them up with recipients, plus it gives me a “hobby” too! I send these surprise boxes every month or two, filled with items I’ve picked up for next-to-nothing. They are useful, entertaining–and I explain at the on-set that they can be resold or re-gifted if wanted. I pack colorfully, so even opening the box is fun! Sometimes I stick to a theme of something dear to their heart, such as “Irish heritage” or “missing good ole Kansas”..
One more: A cafe in a tiny small town too far to drive to regularly is about to go under. The owner has tried to hang on by a thread. Sometimes I anonymously send a few dollars in a plain envelope to her, knowing that it can make the difference between survival for the day, or not. Someone did it for me once years ago, and literally saved me from starvation and despair.
