Neighbourhood Gardens and Sharing

by TaxMama on December 22, 2008

TaxMama – I love your column and here is my idea:

1) Have neighborhoods get together and decide which neighbor will plant which vegetable each season – develop a neighborhood map and divide seeds. Front yards and back yards can be great places to plant vegetables (corn, gourds, melons, herbs). As the neighbor starts harvesting, he will give out a limited number of coupons to neighbors (one for each plant he plants), and they can be exchanged for produce.
 2) Grow egg-laying chickens in back yards, allow them to live freely.
3) Work with municipal government and homeowner associations to allow that to happen.
4) Compost and share compost.

I hope this helps a bit.

I live in Dallas, and most of this is not happening yet, but I am sure it will.

Kind regards,
