Focus On The Local Community
by Andrew on January 12, 2009
First of all get out there and actually meet your neighbor. Next set up a neighborhood network of volunteers (similar to a neighborhood watch – where you look out for one another.) Volunteers donate their time and services at available increments- ie: 1x week, 1x month etc. As the economy tightens and people have less and less money to spend on services – the neighborhood watch can support those in need:
– Sarah a single mom with 2 kids needs the lawn mowed but can’t afford her landscaper? Johnny can do it on Saturday.
– Bob the elderly gentleman at the end of the block recently widowed can’t afford gas to get to the grocery store anymore- Kristen will drive him.
– Steve a local contractor lost his job and needs to feed his family and kids- the neighborhood will take turns cooking them dinners until he is back on his feet again.
– Local bake sale to save the Johnson’s home etc.
By getting to know your neighbors again and reaching out to strangers we can once more create a community feeling and know when others are in need. On the flip side our neighbors will not feel as though they are so alone in this. We are here on this earth to help one another, to give back to those in need, to teach and to learn. Why not start at home and come together as a community again to make it through these tough times.
