How I Survived During My Times of Poverty
I lived in an apartment complex where all of us were enduring the struggles to survive hard times. We came together and helped each other by putting what little we had together as a community.
We cooked breakfast for all of the children and walked them to school. Breakfast was prepared for the mothers who went off to work and no one had to worry about their children as we had an open door policy. There were no baby sitting fees because we all raised each other’s children as our own. We shared from our pantries when food was low. Since we did not have cars we all walked together to the grocery store so that we would have enough hands to carry all of the groceries we needed. On the outside looking in from a middle class family member, she thought we were having a party at times when we (the poor) just simply pooled our pitiful resources. All together there were about twenty children and eight adults eating at one house. One family brought over the roast, another the vegetables and another the bread and sodas. We talked about our day, cleaned up after the meal and prepared for the next.

For several months I had to live on unemployment benefits, and my neighbors and I grew a garden and shared the vegetables we grew. What we couldn't grow, we purchased in bulk from the farmer's market and split up among ourselves. No one had a car, but one guy had some tools and kept our bicycles working.
